One of the questions we sometimes wonder about when planning a holiday is whether our accommodation will be close enough to all the things we want to see and do.

If you're considering staying on Aore Island in Vanuatu, you might be wondering the same thing.

Will you be too far away from Santo's famous Blue Holes? What about Champagne Beach, Port Olry, rainforest adventures and the fascinating World War II sites around Luganville?

The good news is that staying on Aore Island doesn't mean missing out on Espiritu Santo. The two islands are separated by the Segond Channel, and a short boat trip connects Aore with Luganville, Santo's main town.

At Aoredise, you can enjoy the privacy and relaxed pace of your own island holiday home while still having access to the many experiences that make Santo such a special destination.

A short boat ride opens up a world of possibilities

Aore Island sits just across the water from Luganville. Rather than thinking of the channel as a barrier, think of it as part of the island experience!

Once you're settled into Aoredise, you can arrange boat transfers to Luganville and plan your excursions from there. Depending on the activity, your day might involve a local guide, a road trip along the coast, a journey inland through villages and plantations, or a boat trip to another beautiful corner of the region.

The important thing is that you don't need to change accommodation every time you want to explore somewhere new.

You can spend the day discovering Santo and return to Aoredise in the afternoon or evening, ready to relax by the beach, enjoy a drink on the deck or watch the lights of Luganville across the water.

Discover Santo's incredible Blue Holes

If there's one experience that belongs near the top of your Santo wish list, it's a visit to one of the island's famous Blue Holes.

These remarkable freshwater swimming spots are known for their extraordinary shades of blue and turquoise. Surrounded by tropical vegetation, they offer a very different experience from swimming in the ocean.

Among the best-known options are Nanda, Matevulu and Riri Blue Holes. Each has its own setting and character, and some involve a short journey by canoe or boat along a river.

Imagine swimming in wonderfully clear freshwater, surrounded by lush greenery, before heading back to your island home at the end of the day.

It's the sort of experience that makes a holiday in Santo so memorable.

Champagne Beach and Port Olry: A day along the coast

Santo's east coast is another highlight for visitors who love beautiful beaches and relaxed island scenery.

Champagne Beach is famous for its pale sand and clear water, making it a wonderful place to swim, take photographs or simply enjoy the view.

Further north, Port Olry has a laid-back village atmosphere, lovely beaches and opportunities to enjoy local food by the water.

These destinations can be combined into a full-day excursion, often with a Blue Hole visit included along the way. It's a great way to see more of Santo without having to organise a different base for every part of your holiday.

Pack your swimming gear, take your camera and leave some room in the day for an unhurried lunch beside the sea.

For the adventurous: float through a rainforest gorge

Not every Santo adventure involves a beach.

The Mount Hope Float tour offers a chance to experience the island's lush interior from the water. Wearing a life jacket, you float downstream through a scenic river environment framed by tropical vegetation and limestone formations, eventually reaching a waterfall.

It's an appealing option for visitors who want something active and memorable without committing to a full-day trek.

For those looking for a bigger challenge, the Millennium Cave tour offers a more demanding adventure involving rainforest walking, village guides, cave exploration and river swimming.

These are very different experiences, so it's worth considering your fitness, interests and available time when deciding which one to choose.

Waterfalls, horses, golf and more

Blue Holes and beaches might be the headline attractions, but there's plenty more to discover around Santo.

Tuffuntari Waterfall offers another opportunity to enjoy freshwater swimming and tropical scenery.

Santo Horse Adventures provides a different perspective on the island, with guided rides through the surrounding landscape.

Santo Golf Club is an option for visitors who would like to fit in a round of golf during their stay.

And if you're interested in the island's history, you can explore the remains of its important World War II past.

There's no need to squeeze everything into one or two days. Choose the experiences that interest you most and leave time to enjoy the place you're staying as well.

Espiritu Santo played an important role as an American military base during World War II, and traces of that history remain part of the island today.

Million Dollar Point is one of the best-known sites. It is famous for the equipment and machinery dumped into the sea after the war, and is particularly interesting for divers and snorkellers.

In and around Luganville, you can also explore local historical displays and learn more about the island's wartime role.

For diving enthusiasts, Santo is internationally known for the wreck of the SS President Coolidge, while other visitors may prefer a land-based history tour.

It's a reminder that Santo offers much more than its beautiful beaches and swimming holes.

And what about Aore Island itself?

Of course, you don't have to spend every day exploring the mainland.

One of the pleasures of staying at Aoredise is having the freedom to do as much or as little as you like.

Enjoy a morning swim or snorkel from the beach. Take a kayak or SUP out on the water. Explore the island by bicycle or relax in the hammock with a book.

You can prepare your own meals, enjoy the outdoor living spaces and settle into the slower pace of island life.

When you're ready for an outing, Santo is close enough to add another adventure to your holiday.

And when you're ready to unwind, you have your own private holiday home to return to.

How to plan your stay

The best approach is to decide which experiences matter most to you and allow enough time to enjoy them.

For example, you might devote one day to the Blue Holes, another to Champagne Beach and Port Olry, and a further day to a river adventure or a historical tour.

Some activities are half-day excursions, while others require most of the day. Travel times, boat transfers and tour arrangements vary, so it's worth checking the details before setting off.

At Aoredise, we're happy to help guests explore their options and connect with local activities and tour providers. We recommend arranging transfers and any tours that require advance booking before you travel, particularly during busy periods.

You can also leave some days free to enjoy Aore Island itself. After all, a holiday shouldn't feel like a race to tick off every attraction!

The best of both worlds at Aoredise

If you're planning a trip to Vanuatu, don't assume you have to stay on the mainland to experience everything Santo has to offer.

Aore Island gives you a different way to enjoy the region: a quieter setting, your own holiday home and a beautiful island environment, with Luganville and Santo's many attractions within reach by boat and onward transport.

Explore the Blue Holes. Discover beautiful beaches. Venture into the rainforest. Learn about the island's history. Then return to Aoredise and enjoy a peaceful evening beside the water.
